What is your vision?
Modern society celebrates the ideas of visionary leaders, particularly when they are able to communicate how they see the world in a way that is relatable. Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, Rosalind Brewer all have articulated a future state that, not only guided their focus, but also enlisted people committed to achieving the future reality their leader described.
Visioning is an esoteric concept—and there are many paths that you can take to arrive at one that feels authentic to you—and is inspirational enough to pull you forward when troubles arise. As a leader, your job is to establish a clear and enticing direction that will attract loyal supporters and entice loyal customers. Here is how you know you have arrived at the right vision.
It is aspirational enough to be relevant in either up or down markets.
It is big, hairy and audacious.
Figuring out how to achieve this vision is exciting to you.
It cannot be confused with a mission or a purpose.
It feels right.
You can share it authentically and with confidence.
Establishing a vision for your organization was probably far from your mind when you started. If that is the case, then now is a great time to start assessing your direction and evaluating if your trajectory and vision for what you have built are aligned.
