What I am reading-October 2022
Book cover: The Metaverse-And How It Will Revolutionize Everything
I just finished The Metaverse: And How it will Revolutionize Everything by Matthew Ball. No, this isn’t a book hyping up NFTs, or pushing crypto. This is a serious review of what needs to be true to manifest ‘the metaverse’. What is the metaverse? Definitions vary. However, this is the kind of book that will help you understand how to critique self proclaimed experts and make sense of this rapidly evolving technological future.
The short of it is that if you are planning to read one tome on this abstract concept of the metaverse, this is the book I would recommend. Why?
Our ability to overcome bandwidth and capacity issues - covered
How human behavior has shifted during points of rapid technological advancement - covered
Ongoing transformation of the payment value chain - covered
Other industry applications - covered
The influence of science fiction - covered
Throughout the book, Ball manages the reader’s expectations by reminding them that some innovative ideas may be ahead of their time. Probably the most important point from the book is that we cannot predict what the metaverse will entail because we cannot anticipate how technologies, human behavior, among other macro-level forces will converge, which is a very realistic assessment, in my opinion.
And for the Gen X and Xennial technophiles out there, it is a wonderful walk down memory lane and cues you into all of the change that was happening around us that we just didn’t recognize at the time.
